A big thank you to the presenters at last night's event Your Organisation in their Hands. It was an excellent evening which I really enjoyed. I was particularly interested in the presentation by Steve Dale and his practical advice regarding the development of online Communities of Practice (CoP).
Many organisations struggle with the challenge of creating an initial "critical mass" of engagement a problem that Steve addressed with three simple steps: (i) hold an initial physical launch in which potential contributors are invited and can register; (ii) use facilitators to drive the CoPs, these should be selected from active participants; and (iii) mix online activity with offline e.g. if no one is responding to an particular thread contact them physically (e.g. by phone) and ask them to contribute.
Steve's local government Communities Platform currently has over 70,000 registered users and 1,300 communities.
While I was working with one of my clients a few years a go, I was given a book to read by the CEO. "The Speed of Trust". I read the book with a healthy dose of scepticism having read many management books in the past. But this book resonated with the core principles of Agile for me.
