Here at IndigoBlue we are encouraging everyone to contribute to our blog page as one way of sharing our current thoughts about Agile delivery and transition and strategic change management with a wider audience. Talking with my colleagues we realised that for some of us the thought of writing a blog is exciting and an opportunity to share views with a wider audience but for others the thought was quite daunting.
This made me think that often the fear of doing something is worst than actually doing it. We’ve developed our own hints and tips at IndigoBlue which are really useful to help people new to blogging. These are practical tips which address our rational questions rather than managing - for some - the personal and emotional reactions to writing and publishing a blog for the first few times.
So we got talking about the emotional side and we explored ways that these could be addressed. These ranged from imagining a conversation with someone on the topic you’re blogging about as you write it, thinking of the great feeling you’ll have once it is written and published, imagine yourself and others reading the published blog and celebrating your success to just do it - write something to get started and adopt an agile incremental approach to refine it.
This reminded me of the elephant and the rider in ‘Switch’ by Chip and Dan Heath where they discuss the need to engage peoples emotional side if you want to make a change. By understanding the rider and the elephant and shaping the path this can be a useful framework to introduce change in an organisation or personally however large or small.
While I was working with one of my clients a few years a go, I was given a book to read by the CEO. "The Speed of Trust". I read the book with a healthy dose of scepticism having read many management books in the past. But this book resonated with the core principles of Agile for me.
