One of Masaaki Imai's nicknames is the "Lean Guru", so he certainly qualifies as a guru in our book! Talking of which, his books have become classics in the field of quality management, including the 1986 bestseller - "Kaizen: The Key to Japan's Competitive Success". This was a firsthand account of Imai's own experience with Toyota and other corporations, where Lean was adopted and developed.
The basic principle behind Kaizen is to make simple improvements and refinements to business processes, resulting in greater productivity, better quality, and more profits.
Imai is rumoured to be releasing another book this year, and we'll certainly be getting hold of a copy to see what this most renowned of gurus is suggesting next.
Today's highly competitive and rapidly changing markets that see the rise and fall of the likes of Nokia and MySpace places business imperatives on companies. In particular, companies need to be innovative, introducing new products, updating others to react to changes in the market (or predicting or even creating these market changes).
