So what really makes for good IT delivery? Efficient process re-engineering, good developers, clever technology, pragmatic project managers, robust QA? All of these things can contribute towards success, but the one thing that will result in failure is poor communication and a breakdown in trust between those trying to deliver business value and those implementing IT to support that.
The winner of the UK IT Industry IT Project Team of the Year gave a talk that I went to yesterday at the BCS. The project was the complete revamp of the London Borough of Southwark's website into a highly successful, fresh, engaging and efficient online channel.

I've been thinking for some time now that traditional "Supply of Goods" contracts make building a collaborative client/supplier relationship tough. The nature of the contract is to fix the requirements up front, agree delivery milestones and try to focus the team on delivering what has been defined up front.

A recent article from the International Association for Contract and Commercial Management has concluded that the current focus for nearly all contracts fails to set the appropriate foundations for the relationship between the parties. Instead, many contracts concentrate on the negative - on indemnities, liquidated damages, IP rights and liabilities. I'm sure many will recognise the list.
