Why Wikipedia is wrong about Agile

26 NOV 2010 | Posted in agile project management, agile theory, Wikipedia

Looking at the Wikipedia entry for "agile project management", we were reminded that there are many myths and misinformed views surrounding this very adaptable method of delivering projects. Certainly it started us thinking about how we could update and better inform the article, but before we took that step we thought we'd try exploring and explaining some of our reasoning in a post of our own: just to provide balance to some of the alternative views of Agile that are out there.

A big thank you to the presenters at last night's event Your Organisation in their Hands. It was an excellent evening which I really enjoyed. I was particularly interested in the presentation by Steve Dale and his practical advice regarding the development of online Communities of Practice (CoP).

Backlog or Yule Log?

24 NOV 2010 | Posted in agile approach, agile governance, scrum | Author Rob Smith | 3 Comments

I've just left a meeting in which the programme manager asked a senior business manager, "are those your backlog projects?".  "No" was the response, "they're the projects we'll run next year".  Much hilarity ensued but after the common vernacular from Scrum was explained the Business Manager pointed out "Backlog sounds negative, it implies that work should have been done but hasn't been completed".

I raised this in the IndigoBlue office to be told that others have encountered this issue. Perhaps it's something we should address. Is it time for a new name?

Social Media in Corporations

09 NOV 2010 | Posted in business value, social media | Author Alex McLachlan

I've just been watching Euan Semple's "Do Lecture" - Real Work on the use of social media in large companies.

He has some great stories from his time as Head of Knowledge Management at the BBC and from his current work as a social media evangelist

Microsoft has recently announced the enhancement of their cloud offerings with Microsoft Office 365, which integrates Office Professional, Exchange, SharePoint and the Lync communications suite.

We're often asked how we measure the success of an Agile adoption. In reality this is difficult. The definition of success is subjective and dependent upon the prevailing context, and there is often an absence of a baseline for measurement.

Website photos - ensure relevance

01 NOV 2010 | Posted in usability, website | Author Alex McLachlan

I've never been a fan of using stock images on websites. It can be tempting to go for visual impact with a bold photo, but Jakob Nielsen's article on photos as web contents gives results from eyetracking studies.

Research shows that web users pass straight over stock images they see as having little relevance to the page but will spend a disproportionately high amount of time looking at images that are related to the contents

A picture is worth a thousand words ... but only if it illuminates the words!
