Seminar: Power to Your People – The Death and Rebirth of CRM
Held on 24th March 2010 at the RSA’s HQ at 8 John Adam Street, London.
Despite years of investment, CRM, Donor and Membership systems have failed organisations and individuals. The days of mass communication to homogenised groups is drawing to a close.
The continued emergence of the Internet is creating new opportunities for innovative uses of information; offering new personalised, customer centric product offerings and giving individuals the power to define their terms of engagement.
The seminar looked at the challenges organisations face when creating and implementing an integrated communication strategy. The future in not simply about marketing and technology, it requires an organisation-wide cultural change.
- Abby Wright-Parkes of ACEVO looked at CRM placed in the context of the third sector and the challenges and opportunities this offers. She also talked about member engagement at ACEVO and reflected on the organisation's experience of undergoing a large database and combined website project and the lessons learnt.
- Chris Jones of Remploy talked about the transformation process that he has been undertaking at Remploy, specifically to do with how CRM had been used at the organisation prior to the programme commencing and the thinking and practices that have come from the programme that he is running.
- Dominic Monkhouse, serial entrepreneur, founder of Rackspace and a passionate advocate of self-service discussed his experiences in his talk "Digital Customer Service for the Digital Age". As a self-service evangelist, Dominic spoke about the ways in which digital customer service can improve the satisfaction of members rather than reduce it. Using experiences from his own business background as well as those of some of the world’s most customer focused organisations, Dominic brought into sharp focus what members really want, and how we should be helping them to help themselves.

Seminar: Engaging the Community - the challenges and opportunities for the third sector
Held on 11th June 2009 at the RSA.
Charities, societies, associations and other third-sector organisations have the opportunity to provide new ways to encourage participation and engage with volunteers, members and other stakeholders and to allow interaction. New social and networking tools provide great potential, but also represent significant threats and risks. Harnessing the wisdom of crowds and providing better support for volunteers and members is vital to help underpin the development of the sector.
The seminar was hosted by Matthew Taylor, CEO of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (The RSA).
- Matthew Taylor discussed the RSA’s innovations in engaging its Fellows and his transformation agenda for the RSA.
- Jane Scott Paul OBE, CEO of the Association and Accounting Technicians described the AAT’s Business Transformation Programme, the shift to an online organisation and the benefits from closer engagement with the membership.
- IndigoBlue distilled the key messages of more effective stakeholder engagement.
